Set to be announced on Thursday, Manchester United have offered a contract to Victor Valdes following two months of training at Carrington as a free agent as part of his recovery from a serious knee injury.
The length of the contract is rumoured to be of 18 months and the former Barcelona goalkeeper will act as an understudy to David de Gea who is currently United’s number one goalkeeper.
Valdes’ signing will provide further competition to De Gea, who has been in superb form recently, as current number two Anders Lindegaard is not considered to be good enough by Louis van Gaal.
There have been various rumours of Real Madrid’s interest in De Gea who has been identified as a long-term replacement for Iker Casillas. United’s inability to get him to sign a new contract hasn’t helped at all as his current contract expires in the summer of 2016.
Valdes is currently living in the Lowry Hotel in the city centre but is believed to be looking for property in the same area as his compatriots De Gea, Juan Mata and Ander Herrera. Valdes will also bring his family to live with him in Manchester.
United are looking to let Lindegaard return to Scandinavia while they will not stand in the way of fellow keeper Ben Amos should a club come in for him.
