Is Phil Jones in last chance saloon at United?

Walking up to Old Trafford for the Chelsea game, I checked my phone for imminent team news only to see that Phil Jones was out injured again. Is this guy made of fine china? In the three years he has been at our club he has never had a settled run in the side due to an ever increasing list of injuries, all of which appear self inflicted.

He came to United with glowing recommendations from two knights of the realm, Alex Ferguson and Bobby Charlton. Both raving about the versatile Jones, claiming he could be a future captain of England. Charlton even compared Jones to the great Duncan Edwards, high praise indeed. Jones was bought specifically to replace Ferdinand or Vidic, but he could play in midfield or full back. United splashed out £16.5m for the Lancastrian with the hope that he could develop into a first teamer for years to come.

I much prefer him at centre half. I feel he is not the answer as a defensive midfielder nor is he a full back. He is full on in games, throwing himself into tackles and by all accounts he does the same in training. This is his downfall. He has suffered so many injuries, often many just knocks but it has scuppered his development. By now with Rio and Vidic gone, Jones should be a regular at the heart of United`s defence helping the likes of Rojo and Shaw settle in to the side.

What is so frustrating is how Jones, along with several others at the club are hardly ever available to Louis Van Gaal. He is no use to the club if he is hardly available for selection. His injuries have been going on throughout his United career and something has to change. I admire his commitment to a tackle and he is not a shirker but for his sake, he has to adapt his style because the injuries will mount up and will hold his career back.

I do think Jones is in the last chance saloon with Louis Van Gaal. He is no mug and will move on any player who is either not good enough or never fit. I am now despairing at Jones, he just starts to get a couple of games then he is out again for a month, so frustrating. We have been spoilt with settled defences, from Irwin, Bruce, Pallister and Parker and Evra, Vidic, Ferdinand and Neville but by now Jones should have a number of appearances under his belt and becoming a regular in the national team.

Enough is enough now, time for Jones to stop flying into tackles, otherwise he will be down the road, he is no good to anyone sat in the stands.
