We are less than a week to the start of the season and more importantly we are less than a month to the close of transfer activity. This summer, the activity has been much better (both quality and quantity) compared to the last season disaster. The signings of Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw not just address our pain points but also are excellent transfers. This leaves us in a better state than last year where we left the transfer activity too late in the window.
Is everything in order for Louis Van Gaal’s United? The simple answer is a plain no, because we are still short of 2-3 players to get the squad balance. Hummels, Vidal, Di Maria, Rojo, Blind, Strootman have all been mentioned in various stages but who of these are more likely to join?
1) Mats Hummels
A perfect signing, if ever there is one. He is young, he is experienced, he has played quality teams, he has won titles. Hummels pretty much ticks every box that a coach would have. Insiders say that he would eventually leave Dortmund and his destination would definitely be Manchester United but the chances of that happening this season is next to none.
Chances – It would be a huge coup if Van Gaal lines up this recently anointed Dortmund captain this season.
2) Arturo Vidal
A power house, who according to many reports is just a nod from Van Gaal away from signing. He would definitely add steel to the midfield (something which left us ragged for many seasons now) and would be a quality addition. But, doubts will always persist on his troublesome knee. Players struggle to recoup their form after surgeries and this is exactly what is stopping Van Gaal from Vidal.
Chances – It would be a shocking surprise if he signs
3) Kevin Strootman
A powerhouse midfielder and a player whom Van Gaal loves to have in his sides. Unfortunately, he’s not to be seen on the field till late this year. United would be closely monitoring his progress for a January bid
Chances – January bid highly likely.
4) Di Maria
Jury is split on if and how he would add value to this United team. Last season has been stellar for him at Real especially after reports that he may be sold off last summer. He will cost in the range of 50-60 mn but Van Gaal believes he is a world class winger who can help him run 3-5-2
Chances – Odds have increased over the past week and don’t be surprised if he is a red devil by the next week
5) Marcus Rojo
A steady performer at the world cup and a quality defender. Rumors are still abound that he’s stopped training and has put in a transfer request. Not a first choice but can improve our backline by leaps and bounds.
Chances – Highly likely but also depends on Sporting Lisbon’s attitude
6) Daley Blind
A versatile defender who can play in midfield – again, a favorite of Van Gaal at the world cup. Suits the coach’s thinking of versatile players to the T. There is competition from Barcelona.
Chances – Could be our next signing.
Others like Cuardado and Cavani have been continuously mentioned and monitored but remain highly unlikely to join this season. Either way, it looks exciting on and off the field – something which went missing last season.
