Is Daley Blind the missing piece of the Louis van Gaal plan?

After Tuesday’s 2-1 friendly win over Valencia (which yours truly attended) it was announced that new signing Luke Shaw will be sidelined for a month with a hamstring injury. While this was an inconvenience it was not a major setback, as Van Gaal has the luxury of using either Ashley Young, primarily a winger, or the promising but inexperienced fullback Reece James. If the rumours turn out to be true, Van Gaal has another trick up his sleeve and wants to buy Netherlands utility player Daley Blind from Ajax. 24 year old Blind now has the experience of a World Cup campaign under his belt as well as numerous seasons playing European football and was named Dutch Footballer of the Year for the 2013-2014 season.

Blind would be an excellent addition to the United side as he can play at let back, in the centre of midfield, as a holding midfielder or as a left centre back should he be needed there. It is reported that the transfer fee for Blind would be between £15-20m and the Dutchman has apparently been seen house hunting in the North West in the last few days. After been interviewed about the potential for a move to Old Trafford Blind said “I am happy here in Amsterdam, But if there comes another club I will have to think about it and then we will see.

“You can never make promises in football. When you make a promise, you have to stick to it. There are plenty of players who promise to stay and then leave after all. I am keeping my options open. I am very happy in Amsterdam and at Ajax but you never know what could happen”.

Blind could be joined at Old Trafford by Sporting Lisbon and Argentina defender Marcos Rojo, who has publicly stated he wants to move to United, and has subsequently handed in a transfer request at Sporting.
