Ryan Giggs : United Should Not Retire The Number 11

Retiring a players jersey number in honor of great players is not an unusual act in sports. A common practice amongst many american sports teams, NBA franchise Boston Celtics alone have 21 jersey numbers retired in honor of past greats. If we look at football notable retired numbers include the number six and number three at AC Milan in honor of Franco Baresi (6) and Paolo Maldini (3) and the number six at west ham in honor of Bobby Moore.

With the retirement of Ryan Giggs at the end of last season many United fans have been anxious to see what happens to Giggs’s iconic number 11 shirt. The initial opinion amongst fans was split with some believing that the number 11 should be retired in honor of one of United’s favorite sons. While others argued that another player should be given the chance to carry on the legacy of the iconic shirt much like the number 7 shirt at United.

When questioned in an recent interview with MUTV whether the number 11 shirt should be retired in his honor the man himself has made his opinion about the matter very clear.

“No. There are obviously special cases but it just depends on the club really. I don’t think it’s [right] for United where they constantly churn over great players.

“I haven’t thought about who will take over the number 11 shirt – that’s a good question.

“They’re under pressure, aren’t they?!  I look forward to seeing who takes it and wish them all the best.”

Previous reports in the media that united are looking to re-allocate the number 11 to a new player and these comments by Ryan Giggs has certainly confirmed that we will be seeing a player other than the Welshman wearing the number 11 at old trafford for the first time in the premier league era. The question now is who should get the number 11 shirt ? Is there a player in the current squad capable of handling the pressure of wearing such an iconic shirt after the arguably the greatest legend the club has seen ?  Or will we see a new signing wearing the shirt ? Or will the shirt be left vacant like the number 7 was last season ?
