The transfer window has gone a little cold since United’s swift and exciting double capture of Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw. As fans eagerly await Van Gaal’s return from Brazil, Ed Woodward has been very busy behind the scenes and deals could start taking place once manager and CEO are reunited. Two names that have been ever present amongst United transfer gossip are those of Angel Di Maria and Mats Hummels. Both men could face each other in Sundays World Cup final and this may not be the last time they take the field together this summer.
The Guardian has reported that the Argentina and Germany internationals now top Van Gaal’s wish list as he looks to add creativity to United’s attack and dominance to the defence. Hummels has been particularly impressive during the World Cup, scoring two goals and looking extremely solid alongside Per Mertesacker. He would be a perfect replacement for Nemenja Vidic and is thought to be open to a switch to Old Trafford. A deal would cost United in excess of £25 million but it appears the Glazers are willing to provide Van Gaal with a large budget in order to prevent another disastrous season.
Despite Di Maria being in fine form, the Argentinean’s situation at Real Madrid has been up in the air all season. A move away from Los Blanco’s was, according to his agent, close in January so a move this summer could materialise if Real’s £45 million valuation is met. This huge sum would smash United’s transfer record and it is understood that Van Gaal is willing to match such a fee to ward off interest from big spenders PSG.
Completing both of these deals would cost United upwards of £75 million which would bring their summer spending close to the £150 mark. Sales of Felliani, Cleverley and Zaha would be needed in order to free funds but this summer looks set to be United’s biggest ever transfer splurge.
