After securing midfield and full back targets it has become very clear that Manchester United and Louis Van Gaal have set their sights on strengthening United’s defensive options. The departures of Vidic and Ferdinand along with injury prone duo Smalling and Jones has left United looking weak at the back, this problem looks likely to be tackled in the coming weeks.
Matts Hummels has emerged as a key target for United with German sources suggesting that Van Gaal will make a £20 million take it or leave it bid for the German who is currently busy with his national side in Brazil. Whilst this represents a large profit on the £3 million Dortmund paid for the 25 year old in 2008, it is clear that Jurgan Klopp does not want to sell after loosing key players Mario Goetze and Robert Lewandowski in the last year.
With European giants Real Madrid and Barcelona being credited with an interest in the player it remains unlikely that United could secure a deal and may choose to go ahead with plans to tie up a deal with Thomas Vermaelen following the World Cup.
