According to Talk Sport’s Warren Haughton, Belgian centre-back Thomas Vermaelen is on the verge of joining Manchester United. The 28 year old has struggled with injuries for the past few seasons and finds himself behind the first choice pair of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny at Arsenal.
It was earlier reported that a £6 million bid from Manchester United had been rejected by Arsenal although personal terms had been agreed between United and the Player. United are willing to offer the experienced center back £100,000 per week in wages and Talk Sport claim that the deal could go through for a transfer fee of £11 million.
The Gunners are willing to listen to offers for the player who is entering the last year of his current contract at the Emirates in order to avoid losing their current club captain for free next year.
Manchester United see Vermaelen who shares an agent with Robin Van Persie as a cheap option to add much needed experience to their defensive ranks after losing the experienced pair of Rio Ferdinand and Nemenja Vidic. If United can keep the injury prone Arsenal Captain fit the deal could be a real bargain for Manchester United. At £11 million is this a risk worth taking for Manchester United ?
