Manchester United have, as of last week, had a £6million bid turned down from Arsenal for Belgium defender Thomas Vermaelen, according to the Mirror.
It had been rumoured over the past few week’s that Manchester United would step up their pursuit of Thomas Vermaelen in a hope to get the deal with Arsenal done sooner rather than later, some sources over in Belgium also stated that a personal agreement had already been met with club and player.
Manchester United fanzine Red Issue were first to bring the story to light back in April, were reportedly International team-mate Marouane Fellaini leaked the information that United would be making a move to Vermaelen this summer. A leak that seems to be true.
The Mirror’s latest report, states that Arsenal had turned down a £6million bid from Manchester United last week and the Gunners are seeking double that amount for the 28-year-old.
United’s bid would have been submitted during a week where they secured the signings of Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw, a massive statement with the cheque-book from CEO Ed Woodward at Manchester United after last summers farce of a transfer window.
No doubt United will return to Arsenal with another bid in the next week or so, as they seem to have Thomas Vermaelen firmly on their transfer list, but is he the correct defender on the list for Louis van Gaal’s squad next season?
Manchester United fly out on July 17th on their pre-season tour of the USA, with their first match against LA Galaxy at the Rose Bowl Stadium on 23rd July.
