Transformation of Manchester United from a 7th place club from a year ago into a top-4 and eventually title contender will not be an easy one for Louis Van Gaal. Nor should it be. That’s part of accepting the challenge that has opened the doors to Old Trafford for Van Gaal.
But he knows, if the transformation is to be successful sooner then later, he will need that one important piece of the puzzle. A powerful, strong on the ball, utility central midfielder. And it’s possible that Van Gaal has found the man he is looking for: Sami Khedira.
According to Spanish media, El Confidencial, Manchester United are preparing a big bid for the 27 year old Real Madrid star.
Khedira suffered a severe injury last season that limited him to just 23 games total for both club and country. But he made a strong return back to fitness with Real Madrid late in the season that he even started in the their dramatic Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid. In which he became just the fourth German to win the European Cup with a non-German club. He’s currently with the German national team at the World Cup, and played full-90 in Germany’s 4-0 win over Portugal.
He is a maestro on the field. Always doing the dirty work. And success follows him. Phillip Lahm wears the “C” armband on the German national team, but Khedira is just as an important leader. His national team coach Joachim Loew even said so. Loew has also called Khedira a “natural born fighter”. For Van Gaal’s system to work properly, it will need a anchor man in the midfield. Someone that can keep poise, while making the right pass to start attacks and still focus on his defensive responsibility. Playing counter attack is a important part of the vision Van Gaal sets, and Khedira is one of the best ball-winning midfielders in the world.
The numbers are astonishing when he plays. Germany has allowed just 40 goals in the 47 matches Khedira has played. Without Khedira’s presence, they’ve allowed 28 goals in only16 matches. So it shouldn’t surprise anyone that Khedira was out injured during Germany’s World Cup qualifier draw against Sweden, in which they allowed 4 goals.
He’s a proven winner. Prior to his recent Champions League title with Madrid, he won the Bundesliga title with his hometown Stuttgart, has won the La Liga and Copa del Rey titles with Real Madrid and helped Germany finish 3rd place at the 2010 World Cup. In 2009, he was captain of the German national team which won the U21 World Cup. A culture changing player.
The perfect player for “Van Gaal football”. If Real Madrid does indeed sell him this summer, United must open their check-book and not let him get away.
