Memories of 4 years ago when Netherlands had lost out to Spain in the final would very much have been on the mind of  United’s Robin Van Persie as he led out a much changed dutch side . Netherlands started on the back foot as Spain took the lead on the 27th minute via Xabi Alonso after Diego Costa was fouled in the box by Stefan De Vrij. Robin Van Persie equalized just before the stroke of half time with a brilliant diving header getting on the end of a beautiful ball from the left wing back Daley Blind. One thing is for sure RVP will be very happy at United next year, after scoring undoubtedly the goal of the tournament so far Robin Van Persie ran straight to Van Gaal.

Heading into half-time it looked like the game was going to be a tight affair like many had predicted. Whatever Louis Van Gaal said at his team talk proved out to be very effective as the dutch side came out for the second half and took the game by the scruff of the neck. 8 Minutes into the second half and Arjen Robben gave Netherlands the lead after Daley Blind picked him out with another brilliant ball. Stefan De Vrij piled on the misery for the world champions as he headed in a Wesley Sneidjer corner kick on the 64th minute. Robin Van Persie scored his second of the night capitalizing on an error by Iker Casillas 18 minutes from time before Arjen Robben added his second to complete the scoring 8 minutes later.

Louis Van Gaal silenced all his critics as his 5-3-2 formation worked brilliantly as Spain conceded 5 goals for the first time since 1963. The wingbacks Blind and Janmaat were a constant threat throughout the game as his dutch team established themselves as favorites in the group. More importantly it left millions of Manchester United fans buzzing with excitement over life under Van Gaal.
