Manchester United’s 2020-21 Premier League season got off to a dismal start with a 1-3 loss at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday evening.
Former Sir Alex Ferguson signing Wilfried Zaha came back to haunt us at Old Trafford with a brace in the second half to seal the loss.
The visitors took the lead after only seven minutes when Andros Townsend got onto a low cross at the back post to beat David de Gea.
Roy Hodgson’s side didn’t score again until the final 20 minutes following a harshly awarded penalty against Victor Lindelof. Although the referee had initially waved it away, VAR intervened and adjudged Andrew Ayew’s mishit effort to be intentionally handled by the Swedish centre-back.
David de Gea then saved Ayew’s effort but Crystal Palace were awarded a second chance as Luke Shaw hastily ran into the penalty area prior to Ayew connecting with the ball.
Zaha took the retake and powered the ball into our goal.
Substitute Donny van de Beek scored on his debut from close range to reduce the score to 1-2 with 10 minutes to play before Zaha haunted us again with his second goal, this one on the counter-attack.
