Manchester United have completed the signing of Donny van de Beek for £35 million from Ajax.
The deal may include £5m in add-ons whilst the 23-year-old has signed a five-year deal at Old Trafford.
Van de Beek played an influential role in Ajax’s surprise semi-final run in the 2018-19 Champions League.
Given his age and talent this has to be a contender for bargain of the summer transfer window. The midfielder was previously linked with a move to Barcelona for a fee in excess of £50 million.
It’s also a very interesting move as Donny van de Beek plays a similar role to Paul Pogba in our current 4-3-3 system. He’s an attack-minded central midfielder who makes smart runs into the penalty area, whilst doing the odd bit of defending.
Van de Beek certainly isn’t an out-and-out defensive midfielder though, so it would be hard to see Ole Gunnar Solskjaer playing the Netherlands international alongside both Bruno Fernandes and Pogba at the same time.
As long as the player is happy to rotate that this will be an excellent deal for us from that point of view. The boss rotated very little after the restart, suggesting he had little faith in the likes of Fred, Andreas Pereira and Scott McTominay.
Reports linking us to Jack Grealish have died down in recent weeks and perhaps this signing will end it completely. Though I do think we could do with upgrading the holding midfield role.
Overall though, this is a very exciting and ambitious signing as we should see a lot more goals from central midfield for the new season.
Donny van de Beek will be available for our season opener versus Crystal Palace on Saturday 19 September.
