Manchester United were denied a fifth straight Premier League victory courtesy of Michael Obafemi’s equaliser in the 96th minute at Old Trafford on Monday night.
We had fell behind in the 12th minute moments after Paul Pogba had conceded possession on the edge of our penalty area. With defenders out of position, Stuart Armstrong was fed the ball unmarked and with time to give Southampton the lead from close range.
Anthony Martial, who missed the opportunity to give us the lead two minutes later when he fired a one-on-one straight at Alex McCarthy, produced some excellent control inside the penalty area before an unselflish display to assist Marcus Rashford. Rashford himself had to produce a fine first time effort to find the far corner but did just that to make it 1-1 on 20 minutes.
Three minutes later and Martial went from provider to goalscorer. The French international picked up a ball from Bruno Fernandes before running at the Saints’ defence and producing a powerful effort to give us the lead.
It appeared as though the game was ours to lose at this stage. In the second half, Rashford fired against the top of the crossbar before Southampton started to get a foot hold in the final 20 minutes. We lost Luke Shaw to an apparent twisted ankle before Nathan Redmond forced a good save out of David de Gea five minutes from time.
Brandon Williams then went off with a head injury, leaving us down to 10 men for stoppage time. In the sixth minute of that additional time, Michael Obafemi was on hand to poke home from close range after a corner was headed down into his path.
The draw means we’re outside the Champions League places on goal difference to Leicester City and one point behind Chelsea in third, with three games to go. We’re next in action away to Crystal Palace on Thursday night.
