Manchester United missed out on the opportunity to leapfrog into third place on Monday night as we were pegged back in the 96th minute to draw 2-2 against Southampton at Old Trafford.
The result leaves us in fifth, behind Leicester City on goal difference.
Southampton took the lead after 12 minutes when Paul Pogba was caught in possession on the edge of our own penalty area, leading to Stuart Armstrong finishing from close range.
Three minutes later it looked as though we were on level terms through a fine finish from Marcus Rashford, only for the referee’s assistant to raise his flag for offside. However, the youngster did produce a fine left-footed strike to make it 1-1 in the 20th minute, following an excellent assist from Anthony Martial.
Martial turned provider into goalscorer three minutes after that when the French striker produced a fine solo effort after collecting Bruno Fernandes’ pass.
However, the Saints were on top for the final 20 minutes and levelled the scores deep into stoppage time through substitute Michael Obafemi following a knock down from a corner.
Here are my player ratings from Manchester United 2-2 Southampton:
David de Gea 5 – Big Dave was given little chance with either goal and didn’t have much else to do in between aside from pulling off a smart save to deny Nathan Redmond five minutes from time.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka 5 – Made a few tackles defensively and received the ball down the right wing a few times. However, Aaron Wan-Bissaka did little with the ball at his feet down the wing. Also picked up a booking for a foul in the build up to Redmond testing David de Gea late on.
Victor Lindelof 9 – The Swede came up with an important goalline clearance shortly after we fell behind. Victor Lindelof also made an important block on Danny Ings’ effort shortly after half-time before producing a critical interception of a cross in the final 20 minutes. Although he didn’t get the praise he deserved in commentary, it was very solid performance.
Harry Maguire 5 – Looked clumsy and over the place at times. What he was doing shoving Lindelof out the way on the corner from which Southampton equalised is inexcusable.
Luke Shaw 7 – Made a few good passes in Southampton’s final third, with the most notable of those being an assist ruled out for offside. Not at fault for the opening goal, otherwise Luke Shaw had Stuart Armstrong in his pocket all game. Limped off with an apparent twisted ankle in the final 20 minutes.
Nemanja Matic 8 – Another good performance in front of the back four from Nemanja Matic, who won a number of tackles and interceptions in the middle of the park.
Paul Pogba 5 – Solely to blame for Southampton’s opener and constantly found himself surrounded by too many opponents as Paul Pogba struggled to get into the game. Cut a frustrated figure at times before being substituted just after the hour mark.
Mason Greenwood 4 – Didn’t get in the game at all tonight down the right wing.
Bruno Fernandes 7 – Quiet game by Bruno Fernandes’ standards. Even then the Portuguese superstar still managed to register an assist. Worked hard off the ball for us as well.
Marcus Rashford 7 – Equalised and had a goal ruled out for offside earlier. It was a good showing in front of goal from Marcus Rashford, who teamed up well with Anthony Martial.
Anthony Martial 9 – Missed a one-on-one in the 10th minute but showed excellent control before laying the ball off to Rashford for our equaliser. Anthnoy Martial then scored a fine solo effort himself just moments later to give us the lead.
