Upamercano could be answer at centre-back

Manchester United are in search of a long-term partner for Harry Maguire in the centre of our defence.

Eric Bailly has been plagued with injuries ever since he arrived at Old Trafford, Victor Lindelof has never stepped up to the task and Phil Jones is Phil Jones.

We upgraded in defence last summer with the signings of Maguire from Leicester City and Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace. Both had been among our best players prior to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s summer transfer targets will likely include a centre-back, particularly with Chris Smalling seemingly on his way out of the club following his loan spell with AS Roma in Italy during 2019-20.

We are strongly being linked with RB Leipzig star Dayot Upamecano, with Sky Sports reporting that both us and Manchester City are interested in the 21-year-old.

Upamecano has been a key player in Leipzig’s successes in recent seasons which included finishing runners-up in the German Bundesliga last season, reaching the knockout stages of this season’s Champions League and putting up a title challenge domestically this campaign.

The youngster has been a regular in their first team since joining from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2017, and although he is yet to capped by the senior national team, he is expected to be a regular for France for years to come.

Sky Sports cites Sky Germany as their source, which also reports Bayern Munich are keen on the highly-rated centre-back. The German giants have been devastated by injuries in central defence this season but do have the likes of Niklas Sule, Jerome Boateng, Javi Martinez, Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard on their books.

Dayot Upamecano would no doubt be an exceptional signing should Manchester United be successful in our hunt for the youngster. He has proven himself in both Germany and the Champions League and has a very bright future ahead of him.
