RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner is one of the hottest properties in world football right now. The 24-year-old has scored 21 goals in 25 Bundesliga games this season and a further four goals in seven Champions Leagyue outings.
Manchester United have been linked with a move for the German international in the past and now the player himself has opened up the possibility of joining us this summer.
Werner has also been strongly linked with joining rivals Liverpool and Manchester City, but his latest comments hint that he would prefer a move to Old Trafford instead.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the RB Leipzig star said:
“At this time in professional soccer there are two different variations. The first is to be part of a team like Liverpool or Manchester City. They have a good working team. The teams have also great coaches.
“But this is the question: do you want to go to that kind of team, because the situation is already that hard for each member and you want to be a part of it? That’s one point you have to look at.
“The other side are teams which need some big changes, because they just won a few big titles, but they are not able to compete on the highest level anymore. For me Manchester United is one of these teams.”
The question that Timo Werner has asked himself is whether he wants to be part of an established side or one building for the future, adding:
“So at this point of my career I’m asking myself: do I want to be part of a new team, to build up something new, or do I want to stay at my team and make something great?”
Timo Werner’s comments imply that Manchester United are most definitely in the running for his signature. However, one must think that Champions League qualification for next season is essential. If that is the case, then Manchester City would miss out on the German should their two-year ban be upheld.
The striker would be a huge asset for us, even though Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial have looked good up front for us this season. Based on his performances in the Bundesliga and Champions League over the past couple of seasons, Werner would certainly be an upgrade for us. And to think of him playing ahead of Bruno Fernandes on the pitch is a mouth-watering proposition.
It has been widely reported that Werner has a release clause believed to be €60 million (£52m), though some sources claim it could even be a mere €30 million (£26m).
RB Leipzig’s Bundesliga title challenge took a huge blow over the weekend when they were held to a 0-0 draw away to VfL Wolfsburg, leaving them five points behind Bayern Munich. Many feel the club may have come as far as they will go and that this summer would be a perfect opportunity for Timo Werner to find pastures new. It seems that Manchester United are certainly among the frontrunners for his signature…
