Manchester United completed the Premier League double over Chelsea with a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge this evening.
Similar to the first meeting between us two back in August, Frank Lampard’s side dominated the possession early on but never threatened David de Gea’s goal all game, whilst we took our chances.
Anthony Martial (45′) and Harry Maguire (66′) each headed home their goals in either half to earn us a valuable three points in the race for Champions League football. The victory moves us up to seventh, only two points behind Chelsea, who occupy the final Champions League place.
Here are my player ratings from Chelsea 0-2 Manchester United:
David de Gea 6 – The Spaniard was barely called upon in terms of shot stopping or collecting crosses.
Eric Bailly 8 – Excellent on his first appearance of the season. Eric Bailly didn’t look rusty at all as he made some important defensive tackles around his own penalty area to break up Chelsea attacks as well as blocking more than one goalbound effort.
Harry Maguire 9 – Marshaled the defence very well as David de Gea wasn’t tested. The centre-back won his aerial battles which included connecting with Bruno Fernandes’ corner to double our lead midway through the second half.
Luke Shaw 8 – Played on the left-hand side of a back three but did make the occasional burst forward. Michy Batshuayi really had nothing on our defence as Chelsea’s lone striker.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka 8 – Superb cross to setup the opening goal and neither Pedro nor Willian got the better of our young right wingback.
Fred 8 – Battled in midfield, brought the ball forward, started attacks, won a couple of free kicks and had one wayward effort on goal in a busy game from the Brazilian in central midfield.
Nemanja Matic 7 – Formed a good wall in front of our back four and connected with the occasional long pass in an otherwise sensible passing game from the Serbian.
Brandon Williams 7 – Got forward without putting any crosses into the box from out wide on the left. Did a lot of defensive work up against both Pedro and Reece James. The latter firing narrowly wide early on but not a threat thereafter.
Bruno Fernandes 8 – An excellent performance in the number 10 role; Bruno Fernandes created chances for our strikers and provided the corner which Maguire headed home our second goal. The Portuguese star also struck the base of the post from a direct free kick.
Daniel James 6 – Struggled to get on the ball and was never really a factor in this game.
Anthony Martial 7 – A nice headed goal to give us the lead on the stroke of half-time. Anthony Martial never threatened Willy Caballero’s goal otherwise.
Andreas Pereira (12 mins) N/A – A late introduction to help see out the 2-0 win;.
Odion Ighalo (1 min) N/A – Became Manchester United’s 200th player in the Premier League era and missed a one-on-one in stoppage time that would have capped it off perfectly.
Diogo Dalot (0 mins) N/A – Brought on in stoppage time to help run down the clock and add another appearance next to his name.
