Manchester United will be without as many as five first-team players for our trip to West London to take on Chelsea on Monday night football.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been speaking to the media this afternoon at his pre-match press conference and has given a team news and injury update.
The boss was able to confirm that those already sidelined won’t return in time to face Chelsea. He told MUTV:
“I don’t think we’ll get anyone back for the Chelsea game. Because Scotty, Axel, Tim, they didn’t join too much so they’re not ready to play that game. And Paul is not ready, of course.
“How do we go about playing without Marcus, Paul, Scott? You deal with it.
“We’ve got players who are going to get a chance. They’ve now had a rest, a great rest.”
Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford have been long-term absentees, whilst Scott McTominay and Aexl Tuanzebe had been part of the fitness training camp in Marbella recently, but this game will come too soon for them to make their returns. Timothy Fosu-Mensah is the fifth absentee. The defender, who has yet to make a single appearance this campaign, has suffered an injury setback.
During his press conference, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hinted that January loan signing Odion Ighalo could make his Manchester United debut on Monday night. The Nigerian striker will travel down with the squad despite having yet to train with his new teammates because of injury. However, the manager did not rule him out featuring in the game:
“He’ll travel with us and let’s see if he’s involved or not.
“He’s done his [training programme] and it was always going to be a case of him having to integrate into the group anyway after having been out in China. He needs to get used to the players and the team and up to speed as quick as he can.”
Manchester United will head into the game six points behind Chelsea, who currently occupy the final Champions League spot.
