Manchester United announced the signing of Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Club of Portugal on Thursday evening.
The Portuguese international signed a five-and-a-half year deal at Old Trafford for a reported £47 million transfer fee, that could rise to £67.7m with add-ons.
Bruno Fernandes had been tracked for a number of seasons by many of Europe’s top clubs, having scored 63 goals and recording 52 assists in his 137 appearances in all competitions for Lisbon’s second club.
A photo of the 25-year-old and his entourage is doing the rounds on social media. Bruno Fernandes is holding up his new Manchester United shirt to reveal that he will be wearing the number 18 on his back for the second half of the 2019-20 campaign.
The number 18 shirt was recently vacated by Ashley Young when he departed to Internazionale on an initial six-month loan earlier this month. Bruno Fernandes will become only the third player to wear the number 18 shirt for Manchester United. Paul Scholes was the first.
Bruno Fernandes could make his Manchester United debut as early as Saturday when we host Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League’s evening game. He could face a number of his fellow countrymen with Nuno’s Wolves having the likes of Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho and Diogo Jota in their side.
