Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has given his first team news and injury update of the 2019-20 Premier League season ahead of Sunday’s opener at home to Chelsea.
The boss was speaking at his pre-match press conference this morning and confirmed that he will be without two defenders when we welcome Frank Lampard’s Chelsea to Old Trafford.
Eric Bailly, who missed the African Cup of Nations in Egypt over last season because of injury, still hasn’t fully recovered. The Senegalese international isn’t expected to be a regular in Ole’s team this season following the signing of Harry Maguire.
The boss confirmed Maguire will face Chelsea despite only joining from Leicester City a few days ago.
Timothy Fosu-Mensah is the only other absentee to the boss. The youngster is not expected to see much game time in the Premier League this season so won’t be seen as a big loss this weekend.
Alexis Sanchez arrived back late from the Copa America so is a couple of weeks behind the rest of the squad. The Chilean won’t face the Blues either.
Ole told MUTV this morning:
“Alexis has come in and trained well. Of course, he’s four or five weeks behind the boys and he’s not played apart from a one behind-closed-doors [friendly] here, so I think he’ll see this as an opportunity, as well, to make his mark.”
Aaron Wan-Bissaka is also expected to be handed his debut alongside Maguire in a new look back four for the new season.
Ole’s other signing, Daniel James, is expected to be in our matchday squad but whether the Wales international will start is another story.
Manchester United host Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday 11 August at 16:30 GMT.
