Manchester United are still yet to agree a price with Leicester City for the potential transfer of Harry Maguire, the BBC understand.
The 26-year-old has been one of our priority targets all summer, but Maguire continues to play for Leicester in their pre-season friendlies as we have so far failed to match their valuation of the player.
Earlier this summer we had a £70 million offer rejected for the England international, with Leicester reportedly asking for £85 million.
Given that we failed to land any of our centre-back targets last summer and we went on to concede more goals in a single Premier League season than any previous (54), one would think executive vice chairman Ed Woodward will have to give in and pay the additional £15 million that the Foxes are demanding. Especially as Manchester City are also linked with Maguire and that there are only 10 days left of the summer transfer window, one should advise Woodward to make that offer ASAP.
Eric Bailly is expected to be sidelined with a knee injury for the start of the new season, whilst Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are not good enough to be regulars for a team aiming to finish in the top four. We simply have to upgrade at centre-back before kicking off our 2019-20 Premier League campaign against Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday 11 August.
So far this summer we have only landed Daniel James from Swansea City and Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace. We have notable lost Ander Herrera on a free transfer to Paris Saint-Germain. It goes without saying that we need to make a few more signings before the start of the new season if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is to take us back into the top four.
