Manchester United have been handed massive blow in their attempt to sign Nigeria-Switzerland defender Manuel Akanji from Basel.
The 22-year old centre-back has completed a switch to Borussia Dortmund, where he signed a four-and-a-half deal with the Bundesliga club.
United and Liverpool were linked to the defender this month but they have both lost the race to Dortmund now.
It believed Liverpool dropped out of the race for Akanji signature after they signed Virgil van Dijk for £75million from Southampton.
The highly talented defender joined Basel in 2015 and made a total of 42 appearances scoring five times.
He also helped the Bebbi win the Swiss League in 2016, before they secured the domestic double last year.
Speaking to the press after signing a deal with Dortmund, the 22-year old defender who will wear number 16 jersey said:
“I felt very good in the talks with the Dortmund managers, so it was a decision of the heart and I’ve always liked the football played in Dortmund.
“I’m looking forward to the time here and will do my best.”
Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc also expressed his delight in their new acquisition when he said:
“Manuel’s performances put him on the radar of a number of top European clubs.
“We’re delighted that he’s chosen to join us.
“He has already demonstrated at international and Champions League level that he can play at the highest level in Europe.”
