Manchester United have constantly been linked with a move for Atletico Madrid stars Antoine Griezmann, Yannick Carrasco and Saul Niguez. However, the Times are reporting that Manchester United manager is set to stage a £145million raid on Atletico Madrid for Antoine Griezmann and Saul Niguez. I doubt Mourinho will go for Niguez hence I won’t be discussing him in this article.
Griezmann is certainly a signing that will excite United fans – the France international is developing into one of Europe’s top strikers at Atletico Madrid and will no doubt be in huge demand this summer.
The 25-year-old made a superb impression at Euro 2016, was named French Footballer Of The Year in December, and has been heavily tipped to move to Old Trafford where he will link up with France team-mate Paul Pogba.
The forward has previously admitted he would love to play with Pogba at club level and has also previously suggested his future at Atletico is tied to Diego Simeone’s. The coach recently reduced his contract to 2018, and has openly admitted he would love to manage Inter, and there is hope he could be tempted to Old Trafford.
However, the Frenchman has actually been outscored by Carrasco at Atletico this season. The Belgium international has 10 for the season, one more than Griezmann.
Carrasco could actually prove a neat fit for United. The 23-year-old could slot in perfectly on the left, providing competition for Anthony Martial who has endured a difficult second season and has already been linked with a move away from United, despite only having joined the club in 2015.
Yet Martial has shown glimpses of a return to form in recent weeks and the club would surely be reluctant to sell last season’s top scorer who only turned 21 back in December.
Griezmann’s versatility, meanwhile, means he can play a variety of roles either on the flanks or behind the striker, yet he might be better employed as a central striker.
After a difficult start to his Manchester United career Henrikh Mkhitaryan is finally starting to flourish and looks to be set to make the wide right position his own.
Also Paul Pogba, is currently playing the No.10 role to great effect and starting to excel following his mega-money move from Juventus.
Griezmann could therefore play as the central striker and would surely provide goals and a superb replacement for Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Although the Swede has been a huge hit since moving from PSG, and looks set to stay for another season, the 35-year-old will surely play a reduced role next season as he edges towards the end of a stellar career.
The France international would be a sensational signing although he would certainly not come cheap and United will have to spend big yet again if they are to land the 25-year-old. Yet his most recent comments have certainly suggested he would be amenable to a move to Old Trafford.
