Jose Mourinho has his work cut out for him refreshing Manchester United’s squad.
He has two 35-year olds in key positions. Carrick and Ibrahimovic have offered plenty to the Portuguese this season but are fast approaching the end of their careers.
Mourinho also has four centre backs at his disposal, but has no idea about the identity of his first-choice defensive pairing. Chris Smalling has struggled for consistency and doubts remain over the suitability of current stand-ins Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo.
When it comes to wide players, Mourinho has more options than he needs. Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Juan Mata, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Jesse Lingard, Ashley Young and Memphis Depay either play on the wings or have played there this season. Inevitably. the former Chelsea boss will have to say goodbye to a few members of his squad before he can even consider adding another winger to his impressive arsenal.
That hasn’t stopped the rumours, of course. Galtasaray’s Bruma suggested that Mourinho had spoken to him after United’s 5-2 defeat of the Turkish side in an August friendly, adding in an interview this week:
“It would be an honour for me, but, while it doesn’t happen, I’m focused on Galatasaray. I’ve already played in Spain. I’d perfectly fit in English football.”
Bruma Ready For England
Bruma’s assertion that he would be able to adapt to life in the Premier League is interesting. To add some spice, The Sun have reportedly suggested that an £8m bid could be launched next month. But a deal in January seems very unlikely. Mourinho has several players to move on before he can consider adding further quality to his squad. Depay and Young, for example, are struggling for game time and frequently not involved in their manager’s plans.
Whilst Mourinho wants to add Bruma to United’s ranks, the smart money is on that not happening during thetransfer window.
