Manchester United are set to face disappointment in their hopes of landing the services of Mesut Ozil as it has been revealed that the German international is on the verge of signing a new lucrative deal with Arsenal, according to reports from the Daily Mirror.
Ozil has undoubtedly been a key figure for Arsenal since joining the club from Real Madrid back in summer of 2013 for a reported fee believed to be in the region of around £42.5 million.
During the last two seasons in particular, the German international has been in imperious form and is arguably one of the best attacking midfielder in the Premier League at the moment.
Despite his quality as well as importance to Arsenal though, there has been speculation that Ozil could potentially be leaving the Emirates Stadium due to the fact that he has not yet signed an extension to his current deal with the club.
The former Werder Bremen star is set to enter the final 18 months of his contract soon and Arsenal are understandably keen on tying him down to a new deal as soon as possible. However, Ozil is reportedly demanding wages of around £240,000-per-week while the Gunners’ hierarchy are said to be willing to offer only £160,000.
Due to the contractual negotiation deadlock, there have been rumors that Ozil could potentially be leaving Arsenal, especially as he enters the final year of his contract next summer, and there have been shock reports that Manchester United could look to lure the German star away from North London.
United have previously managed to swoop in for an Arsenal icon in Robin van Persie and there is speculation that the Red Devils will try to pull off an audacious move for Ozil as well.
To put the Arsenal fans at ease though, the Daily Mirror have gone on to reveal that the Gunners have finally managed to make a breakthrough in talks with Ozil and the two parties are set to agree on a weekly wage package of around £200,000 for the 28-year-old.
Although the speculation about Ozil might have excited some United fans, there certainly did not seem much of a chance that Arsenal would sell the midfielder to United even if he did not sign an extension and latest developments should not be viewed as much of a blow for the Red Devils.
