Manchester United are reportedly keeping a close eye on Sporting Lisbon winger Gelson Martins. Martins has enjoyed an impressive start to the new campaign for the Primeria Liga side and has attracted interest from a host of clubs around Europe including Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Sporting are desperate to keep hold of their star man at the club but would be willing to sell Martins should they receive a substantial offer for the player. Reports claim he has a £52m release clause.
United in the past have signed Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Nani from the Portuguese giants and it is thought that it would take an offer in the region of fifty million pounds to persuade Sporting to let the winger leave the Estadio Jose Alvalade next summer.
For a number of years now United have lacked a true genuine world class winger who can bomb down the by-line and get the ball into the box and in signing Martins Mourinho would have a player on his hands who can do just that. His ability to glide past his opponent with ease combined with outstanding trickery on the ball makes him a real talent and is one which would undoubtedly strengthen Mourinho’s attacking options out on the flanks.
The wings remain one of the areas on the field which the new United boss has yet to address at Old Trafford. For what Mourinho has in numbers out on the flanks he lacks ever more so in quality and it is vital he addresses that area should he wish to take Manchester United back to top.
United will undoubtedly face a tough battle for Martins signature but should Mourinho manage to persuade the winger to join up with him at Old Trafford he could go a long way to solving the Portuguese’s woes on the flanks for years to come.
