Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly set to drop Wayne Rooney from his starting eleven ahead of the Leicester City clash at Old Trafford this Saturday.
Rooney has started each of United’s opening five league fixtures so far this season but has looked a shadow of his former self.
The 30-year-old came in particular came in for heavy criticism throughout United’s recent 3-1 defeat to Watford at Vicarage road. Against the hornets Rooney failed to deliver one through ball, created no chances and made just one tackle in the entire ninety minutes.
His lacklustre display against Watford led to leading Manchester United fans forum Red Café to organise a poll in which supporters could either vote for or against Rooney to be removed from the starting eleven. The results were as clear as day light as a whopping 95.8% voted in favour of Rooney been axed.
Rooney’s decline in performances this season has now left Jose Mourinho with a massive selection headache ahead of the game against Leicester City. It was clear upon his arrival that the Portuguese had a lot of faith in Rooney and that he would be a major part of his plans at Old Trafford this season. However his poor form of late has given Mourinho little choice but to remove him from his starting eleven.
In a week that seen United suffer three consecutive defeats Mourinho will know all too well that he needs to turn results around fast at Old Trafford and in order to do that he needs his players firing on all cylinders and Rooney just isn’t doing that.
Now at the age of thirty the United faithful accept that he will not be the same player he was when he was twenty but they still demand a certain level of quality and Rooney has not only failed to produce that this season but has failed to produce that sfor a number of seasons. The Rooney we witnessed tear into opposition defences and almost single handed win games on his own under Sir Alex Ferguson is long gone and from the looks of it will not be returning any time soon.
With Leicester City next up on the agenda Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Juan Mata and Ander Herrera will all be looking to fill the slot left by Rooney in the number ten role. All three are more than capable of coming in and doing a job for United and should they take their chance in the side Rooney could find himself sitting on the substitutes bench more often than he might have imagined.
