Having already brought in the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly through the door, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho now looks to add his fifth and final signing of the summer to complete his Old Trafford jigsaw, and that man is Fabinho.
The Brazilian right-back has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United in recent weeks with Mourinho said to be considering to make a late move for the player.
Whilst Monaco are desperate not to lose one of their star men so late in the transfer window, it is understood that they would be willing to let Fabinho leave should any club meet their valuation for the player, which is thought to be around £25 million.
On his arrival the Portuguese coach stated that he needed specialists in key areas in order to take Manchester United back to the top and has thus far delivered on his promise. However, there remains one key area on the pitch which needs addressing and that area is at right-back.
Antonio Valencia may have made an impressive start to the new campaign but he isn’t a right-back by trade. The Ecuadorian is a winger, and with Matteo Darmian seemingly not in Mourinho’s plans for the season ahead, it is vital that the new United boss brings Fabinho through the Old Trafford entrance door before the window is out.
For years now, since the days of Gary Neville, the Red Devils have lacked a true out-and-out quality on the right-hand side of defence. Many have been brought in to attempt the job but none have had what it takes to succeed. In signing Fabinho, United may finally find their answer.
At just 22 years old Fabinho stands as one of the most exciting full-backs in football. He has all the potential and ability to go on to become one of the world’s best in his position. Manchester United could be getting the best years out of the Brazilian and would be getting a player who would more importantly be going straight into the first-team immediately, should they agree a deal with the French Ligue 1 side.
Whether Manchester United can manage to get the deal over the line before the transfer window slams shut remains to be seen. However, if Mourinho does persuade the Brazilian to join up with him at Old Trafford, this could prove significant in their bid to win the 2016-17 Premier League title.
