After signing Paul Pogba for a monumental transfer fee, Manchester United are once again ready to plunge into the transfer market, albeit, in search of a central defender this time around. The Red Devils have been linked with a series of defenders in the past few months but as it appears now, Jose Mourinho has set his sights on signing Jose Fonte from Southampton.
According to the latest report from ESPN FC, Manchester United have eyed Fonte as their next big signing as their approach for a central defender is about to get intensive.
Currently 32 years of age and having loads of experience of playing in England’s top tier, the Portuguese International is believed to be available for as low as £10m.
Although Mourinho is looking to bring in a new defender, the Portuguese manager will have to make space in his current squad. With the likes of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo waiting for their chance, one of them will have to go if Manchester United are to lure Fonte away from the Saint Mary Stadium.
After overseeing a disastrous start to their season, Arsene Wenger is also looking to sign a defender in the remaining part of the transfer window. The Gunners were forced to experiment with the inexperienced pairing of Holding and Chambers against Liverpool. And as the 4-3 score line suggests, that experiment failed miserably for them.
Therefore, having learnt his lessons this early in the transfer window, Arsene Wenger is looking to sign an experienced centre-back before the transfer windows shut down later this month.
While the likes of Gabriel Paulista and Per Mertesacker aren’t available in the near future after suffering injuries, Arsenal was rumored to be in contact with Valencia’s Shkodran Mustafi. But as it seems by the look of things, Valencia’s evaluation of getting nothing less than 30 Million Pounds for their star defender has distracted Wenger from this particular transfer activity.
Talking about Jose Fonte, the former Benfica man was a key member of the Portuguese National squad which lifted the European trophy in France earlier this summer. Alongside the likes of Pepe, Fonte showed such heroics which helped Fernando Santos’ men to lift their first ever Major trophy in the entire history of Portuguese Football.
Fonte made no less than 37 Premier League apps last season as Southampton finished above the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool in the Premier League standings. So while he’s on the wrong side of 30, the 32-year-old might feel that this is his last chance to join an elite club.
