With less than forty eight hours to go before the Reds entertain Bournemouth at Dean Court, new united boss Jose Mourinho has plenty of options to choose from as he aims to collect his first three points as Manchester United manager.
Despite sections of the united faithful hoping for Mourinho to adopt a 4-3-3 formation, it seems increasingly likely that he will remain with his favoured 4-2-3-1 formation against the cherries.
Starting it goal it will undoubtedly be David De Gea in between the sticks for united. However at right-back the Portuguese has a dilemma, should he stick with Antonio Valencia or should he twist and play Matteo Darmian? I suspect Mourinho will opt for Valencia. Despite Valencia been primarily a right winger by trade, his impressive outing against Leicester in the Community Shield on Sunday looks set to keep the Ecuadorian in Mourinho’s starting eleven ahead of the Italian.
At centre-back Eric Bailly is poised to make his first official appearance in the Premier League and he is likely to be partnered by Daley Blind, as Chris Smalling will be unavailable for the trip due to suspension. Out at left-back it is widely expected that Luke Shaw will start the game, as he bids to regain full match fitness after missing much of the last campaign through injury.
With new signing Paul Pogba missing out through suspension, Mourinho look set to keep Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick in the centre of United’s midfield, keeping the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin and Ander Herrera sitting on the substitute’s bench.
Jesse Lingard looks highly likely to retain his place in the starting eleven following his solo goal against the foxes on Sunday, with Memphis Depay again missing out, whilst Anthony Martial is a near certainty to start on the other flank.
Wayne Rooney is expected to start the game in an advanced role, acting as a number ten in and behind the front man. Leaving Henrikh Mkhitaryan on the united substitutes bench.
Leading the united attack is likely to be Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Swede has enjoyed life thus far in a Manchester United shirt and will be hoping to open up his Premier League goal account for the reds on Sunday.
The substitute’s bench will likely include Sergio Romero, Marcus Rojo, Morgan Scheiderlin, Ander Herrera, Memphis Depay, Mkhitaryan and Marcus Rashford.
Juan Mata, Ashley Young, and Bastian Schweinstiger could be the faces to miss out altogether for the trip, as united look to start the new season with three points.
