Broken ribs? Injured pelvis? These are the injuries recently suffered by Marouanne Fellaini and Angel Di Maria in training, bringing the total tally of recorded injuries this season to an obscene number. Many fans are beginning to wonder just what the problem is. While United’s defenders from the Ferguson era were already infamous for picking up injuries at ease, the ridiculous number of injuries suffered this term is unprecedented.
Many expected Angel Di Maria to feature against Newcastle on Boxing Day but were surprised when the Argentine was left out of the match day squad all together. The club later on announced that the attacker was injured during training sparking off a series of questions and jokes on Twitter about the nature of United’s training routine.
While Louis Van Gaal has received unquestionable support from the Old Trafford faithful, he may soon find himself under the spot light if he does not find a solution to the reoccurring injuries that have plagued his players this season. Surely it cannot be a chance occurrence that players keep getting injured in training and Van Gaal might have to hire better physios and fitness coaches or pay extra attention to the training routines to avoid over exerting the players. To be fair, none of the players have come out to publicly criticise the training routines, but given Van Gaal’s pedigree, it may not be for lack of want. Whatever the reason, we are all hoping that the number of injuries suffered by the players reduce as we go forward in the season, and that the club finds a lasting solution to the injury prone players.
