Wayne Rooney : Manchester United Captain

After months of speculation Manchester United have finally announced Wayne Rooney as the new club captain and Darren Fletcher as the new vice-captain. With the departure of former captain Nemenja Vidic and experienced heads such as Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra and Ryan Giggs United fans have been anxious to see who new manager Louis Van Gaal appoints as captain. Robin Van Persie who was the captain of Louis Van Gaal’s dutch side was widely regarded as the favorite for the post. The bond between Robin Van Persie and Van Gaal shared was clearly there to be seen throughout the world cup and many had gone as far as predicting that Rooney would be shown the exit door at United.

After impressing the new Manager throughout the pre-season Wayne Rooney has proved once again that a happy Wayne Rooney could be Manchester United’s biggest asset and convinced the new manager that he is the man for the job. Closing in on 10 years at the club he is the second longest serving member behind Darren Fletcher. At 28 years of age, rarely injured and always in the starting XI he is definetely the best candidate in the current squad. Furthermore by handing Wayne Rooney the captaincy Louis Van Gaal has once again showed the squad that he will give every player in the squad a fair chance to prove themselves and there are no favorites. Hopefully the decision by Louis Van Gaal will bring out the best out of Wayne Rooney.
