Arsene Wenger has today confirmed that Arsenal have received a number of official bids for defender Thomas Vermaelen, one of those bids from Louis van Gaal and Manchester United.
It has been rumoured since before the World Cup that Thomas Vermaelen was on Manchester United transfer radar for the summer, a move that is said to be in the region of £10million with wages up to £80,000 a week.
FC Barcelona are reportedly also interested in the Belgium defender, also reportedly submitting an official bid at the start of the week.
When Arsenal Wenger was asked about the transfer situation, as well as confirming Manchester United’s bid, he also said:
“We have offers from abroad, and ideally i would rather sell him to a club abroad.”
The defence of Manchester United is one that needs to be addressed, since the departures of long serving reds Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand. Despite the back three of Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones having a good pre-season, Louis van Gaal is set to look at bringing in Vermaelen with immediate effect for the start of the new season.
Thomas Vermaelen is currently in London, having returned from his summer holiday’s after the World Cup, holidays which he spent with Robin van Persie and wife Bouchra.
