Manchester United will not retire the number 11 shirt

It has been a eventful week already for Manchester United. On the same day as they announced their new manager Louis van Gaal, Ryan Giggs also released the news that he would be retiring as a player to become full time assistant manager at Old Trafford for next season.

As the news broke on social media, many Manchester United fans were calling for the number 11 shirt to maybe be retired from the club also, but in a report in the reputable Mark Ogden at the Telegraph, stating that the club will issue the number 11 to another, maybe new incoming player next season.

It very much looks like Manchester United will have a busy summer transfer window, both ins and outs, with Luke Shaw likely to be the first to be announced before the World Cup starts over in Brazil.

With Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic both also leaving the club, there are a few, well respected squad numbers up for grabs. Along with the legendary Ryan Giggs’ number 11, numbers 5, 7, 9 and 15 are all vacant.
